Write your own test

Write a test of your own for a class or a course: questions Kelvin works out, and written questions you answer yourself.

Training and classes · For teachers and supervisors · Updated 12 Oct 2026

Your own tests mix two kinds of question. Kelvin works out the answer to a calculated question, with each student's own figures. You answer a written question yourself. Tests belong to your firm, and nobody outside it sees them.

Who sees a test's answers

Colleagues in your firm can open your tests and set them in their own classes or courses, but only you and your firm's owners and admins see the answers to the written questions, or can change the test. Firms often train their own engineers, so nobody being trained sees the answers that way.

Start a test

  1. 1

On My classes, choose Tests, then New test.

  2. 2

Give it a Title. Add Instructions (optional) if students should read something above the questions.

  3. 3

Add questions under Add a question: see Add a calculated question and Add a written question.

  4. 4

Choose Save draft whenever you like. A draft can be changed freely, but can't be set yet.

Publish, change and retire it

  • Publish makes version 1, and the test can then be set in a class or course.
  • Once it's published, a change stays in the page until you choose Publish version and the next number, or Discard changes. It can only be published when nothing is left to fix.
  • Classes and courses already set the test keep the version they were given. Versions lists every one.
  • Retire stops it being set again. Publish it again brings it back as it was.
  • Delete draft removes a draft that was never published. A published test is retired, never deleted.

Note

Kelvin works out every figure a student is marked on. A written question never asks for a figure: use a calculated question for that.
