Start a project

Choose a project's type (refrigeration, HVAC or hydronic), which fixes its calculation chain, then open it on its first station.

Getting started · Updated 7 Oct 2026

Every project in Kelvin has a type: refrigeration, HVAC or hydronic. The type decides the calculation chain the project runs through, and it can't be changed once the project exists.

  1. 1

Choose New project on the Dashboard or on Engineering Projects.

  2. 2

Under Project type, choose Refrigeration, HVAC or Hydronic. The line under it says what that type covers.

  3. 3

For refrigeration, choose Open Cycle. The design is created when you save it there with Save design, and it then appears on Engineering Projects.

  4. 4

For HVAC or hydronic, type the Project name and create it. Tick Chilled or heating hot water plant on an HVAC project that also has chilled or heating hot water plant.

  5. 5

A new HVAC project opens on Design Conditions, and a new hydronic project on Circuits.

The chain follows the project

Once a project is open, the rail draws its chain, under Refrigeration chain, HVAC chain or Hydronic chain, and each station opens that project. With no project open, the rail offers Open a project instead.

  • Refrigeration: Heat Load, Cycle, Pipe Layout, Equipment, Refrigerant Charge, Energy, BOM & Running Cost, then Reports.
  • HVAC: Design Conditions, Space Loads, Air Systems, Ducts, Fans, then Reports. With hydronic plant, Circuits, Plant, Pipe Sizing, Pumps and Expansion & Volume come after Fans.
  • Hydronic: Circuits, Plant, Pipe Sizing, Pumps, Expansion & Volume, then Reports.

Note

Hydronic plant can be switched on later, on an HVAC project's Design Conditions station. The type itself can't change: to work a job as another type, start a new project.

Before you start

A project is saved to the firm you're working in, so you need a firm first: see Create a firm. Some stations and cycle types depend on your firm's plan: see Choose a plan for your firm.
