What each firm role can do

Owner, admin, engineer and reviewer: what each may do in your firm, and how to change a role, remove someone or leave.

Getting started · Updated 7 Oct 2026

Everyone in a firm has one role there, and it decides what they can do in that firm. Settings → Members lists everyone with their role. A firm always keeps at least one owner.

  • Owner: everything an admin can do. Only an owner can make someone an owner, invite an owner, or change or remove another owner, and only an owner applies for the Education plan.
  • Admin: runs the firm and its people. The firm profile and the checking rule on Settings → Firm; roles, invites and removals on Settings → Members; the plan and billing details on Settings → Billing; and the pages under Admin · owners and admins. Owners and admins also approve checked calculations.
  • Engineer: creates and saves the firm's projects and calculations, and checks colleagues' work.
  • Reviewer: reads the firm's work without changing it, and can check colleagues' calculations.

A calculation is checked by someone other than the engineer who prepared it, unless the firm allows self-checking on Settings → Firm.

Change someone's role

  1. 1

    Open Settings → Members.

  2. 2

Choose the new role in their row's Role cell. Kelvin saves it straight away.

Only owners and admins see the role cells, and only an owner can change an owner's role.

Remove someone, or leave

  1. 1

On Settings → Members, choose Remove (the bin) at the end of their row.

  2. 2

Confirm with Remove member. On your own row it reads Leave firm.

They lose access to the firm's work straight away. The calculations they saved stay with the firm, marked as prepared by them. Rejoining takes a new invite.

Note

Kelvin refuses a change that would leave the firm with no owner: make another member an owner first. Engineers and reviewers can't remove themselves, so to leave a firm, ask its owner or an admin.
