Total the refrigerant and oil charge

Add up pipe, equipment, receiver and additional charge, then sump and circulating oil, with where each figure comes from.

Pipework, equipment and charge · Updated 7 Oct 2026

  1. 1

Choose the system in System, then one of its layouts in Pipe layout. Pipe charge is counted only once a layout is picked.

  2. 2

Check Equipment charges: the evaporators and condenser in the system's latest equipment selection, each with the operating charge from its datasheet entry. Type a per-unit charge where one is missing.

  3. 3

Check Receiver volume and Fill factor, enter any Additional charge, and set the Oil figures from the makers' datasheets.

  4. 4

Read Charge build-up: pipe, equipment, receiver and additional charge add to Total refrigerant, and sump and circulating oil to Total oil, each with its basis.

  5. 5

Name it in Calculation name and choose Save calculation.

Where each figure comes from

  • Pipe charge: each sized segment's internal volume × the refrigerant's density at that line's conditions, on the layout's own sizes, tube series and sizing basis. Pipe charge lists every segment. A run that rises on a smaller bore counts each bore's own metres.
  • Equipment: per-unit charge × quantity. A model whose entry has no Operating charge isn't counted until you type its per-unit charge.
  • Anything outside the equipment selection goes in as a custom item, with its name, its charge and Add.
  • Receiver: Receiver volume × the liquid's density × Fill factor. The volume fills from the receiver in the equipment selection. The fill factor starts at 0.8, the page default with no cited source. The liquid is read where the receiver sits: condensing less subcooling, a cascade's cascade condenser outlet, or a booster's flash tank.
  • Additional charge: traps, accumulators, filter driers and the like, in kg.
  • Sump oil: Compressor oil × Oil density. The volume fills from the compressors' oil charges in the equipment selection. Oil density starts at 0.92 kg/L with no cited source, so enter your oil's figure from its datasheet.
  • Circulating oil: total refrigerant × Oil circulation × the share that gets past the oil separator. It's an estimate of the oil held up in the circuit, because a circulation rate is a share of the circulating mass, applied here to the static charge. Oil circulation starts at 2%, the page default with no cited source; use the compressor maker's figure.
  • A separator in the selection takes off the separation efficiency its datasheet publishes, when the design's discharge flow is within its rating. One with no published efficiency earns no credit.

What it doesn't count

  • Coil, case and gas cooler internal volumes aren't calculated. They count only as charges you enter from the makers' data: a display case's coil as a custom item, and a gas cooler's charge typed per unit on its line.
  • Without a picked layout there's no pipe charge. Without cycle results the layout can't be sized and the receiver isn't counted.
  • A cascade's layout is the low stage only, so the high stage's pipework isn't charged here.

Saved calculations

  • A chip under Saved calculations loads that calculation exactly as it was saved. When you change the system, the page opens that system's most recent one.
  • Update calculation keeps the version it replaces in its history.
  • Calculated from names the system, the layout and the equipment selection the figures came from, and says what's missing and what that leaves to enter by hand.

Note

A per-unit charge you type over an entered one stays as typed, and its line says so. Each line names whose figure it is when the charge was published for another refrigerant.

The pipe sizes come from Draw and size a pipe layout.
