Draw and size a pipe layout

Bring in the Heat Load rooms, draw the suction and liquid runs to each evaporator, and let Kelvin size every segment from the cycle.

Pipework, equipment and charge · Updated 7 Oct 2026

  1. 1

Choose the system in System. Its cycle results give the conditions and flows every pipe is sized on, so if it has none, open it in Cycle and recalculate first.

  2. 2

Under Rooms from Heat Load, choose Import all rooms once. Each room lands on the plan at its Heat Load footprint, one unit for each evaporator placed in it, carrying its duty.

  3. 3

With the Pipes tool, click empty space where the plant is to start a run, click to add bends, and click an evaporator to finish the run.

  4. 4

To tee off, start the next run on an existing one: the pointer snaps to the run and marks the tee point. Finish the branch on its evaporator.

  5. 5

Drag any other evaporator from the Evaporators palette onto the plan. It starts at 10 kW, the page default with no cited source, so click it and set its load in the Evaporator sheet below the ledger, or right-click it and choose Quick edit.

  6. 6

Read the sizes in the Segment ledger below the plan, and each evaporator's path in Per-evaporator totals.

  7. 7

Name the layout in Layout name and choose Save layout.

Kelvin sizes as you draw. Each drawn run is a suction line with its liquid line beside it, and each stretch of pipe carries the load of every evaporator beyond it, so a trunk between tees carries the sum of what it feeds. The free end of a run that isn't an evaporator is taken as the plant end.

Drawing controls

  • Clicking an evaporator ends a run. To end it anywhere else, right-click or choose Finish; a run has to reach at least one evaporator before it can finish. Undo point takes back the last click and Cancel drops the run.
  • Snap keeps points on the plan's grid. 45° lets a run go diagonally as well as straight across and up.
  • Right-click a run for View pipe performance, which jumps to its row in the ledger, or Delete connection.
  • Drag an evaporator to move it, and its runs follow. Right-click it for Quick edit or Delete evaporator.
  • A run can't join evaporators from different suction groups, such as a low-temp and a medium-temp case on a two-stage or booster system.
  • After an import, Suggested trunk routing lists the rooms in an order that keeps the total run short. It's a suggestion only: draw the runs the way the site runs.

Cases fed by one set of pipes

Cases in a row fed by one suction and one liquid tail belong in a line-up, so the tail is sized for their combined load. Shift-click the cases on the plan and choose Join into line-up, or right-click one case to join the cases touching it. Then draw one run to the line-up. A line-up holds cases of one suction group.

Where the figures come from

  • Pressures, temperatures, superheat and subcooling come from the system's cycle results. Each evaporator's mass flow is its load over the refrigeration effect.
  • Drawn lengths are measured off the plan at its scale. Type a length in a ledger row to override it, and its reset link puts the plan's length back.
  • Discharge and the other plant lines aren't drawn. They're listed under System lines in the ledger on page-default lengths, with no cited source, until you type the real ones.
  • Equivalent-length factors are the code's defaults, with no cited source: 1.4 for drawn suction runs, 1.3 for drawn liquid runs and 1.2–1.5 for system lines. Change one under Columns → Eqv. factor.
  • A room with no length or width imports at 8 × 6 m, the import's default with no cited source. Select the unit and drag its resize handle to change it.

What a layout covers

  • Display cases are drawn and piped like any evaporator, but their built-in coils aren't selected on the Equipment page.
  • A cascade's layout is the low stage only. It's sized and charged in the system's own refrigerant, so the high stage's discharge and condenser liquid aren't sized here, and the page says so.
  • A booster's ejector lines are inside the pack and aren't on the layout.

When it goes wrong

  • No cycle results: nothing can be sized. Open the system in Cycle and recalculate.
  • Refrigerant not in the library: the plan still draws and saves, but no segment is sized.
  • Import all rooms adds the rooms every time you choose it, so a second import places a second copy. Delete the extras, or choose New layout to start again; it asks before throwing away unsaved work.
  • An evaporator with no run drawn to it reads Not piped in Per-evaporator totals, and has no line in the ledger.

Note

Saving keeps every revision: Update layout keeps the version it replaces in the layout's history, and Save as copy saves a new layout instead. Equipment, Refrigerant Charge and the reports read the saved layout. PDF report prints the plan as it is on screen, with the sizes and the per-evaporator totals.
