Save a cycle design and compare revisions

Save and update a design, keep every version it replaces, and trace an earlier revision or another project over the cycle on screen.

Heat load and the cycle · Updated 7 Oct 2026

A design is saved whole, and every update keeps the version it replaces, so an earlier revision can be restored or traced over the cycle you are working on.

Save and update

  1. 1

Choose Save design. It needs a Design name and a cycle that solves. The design is saved to Engineering Projects, which then opens.

  2. 2

To change a saved design, choose its name in Engineering Projects to open it in Cycle. The button then reads Update design.

  3. 3

Choose Update design. The version it replaces is kept in the design's Version history.

  • If the design has been saved again since you opened it, Kelvin asks before it overwrites those changes.
  • Saving over a checked or approved design clears its sign-off, and the version it replaces keeps it. The hint under the button says so before you save.
  • A new design you haven't saved is kept in this browser and, once it has a name, restored when you come back to Cycle. While it is named and unsaved, the browser also asks before you close or reload the page.
  • To go back to an earlier version, choose Restore on it in Version history. It opens in Cycle, and is kept only when you save it there.
  • Saving needs an owner, admin or engineer role in your firm. Anyone in the firm can compare.

Compare with another cycle

When there is a saved cycle to compare with, a Comparison block sits under the diagram.

  1. 1

Under Comparison, choose a cycle in Compare with. This design offers it as saved, before your edits on screen, and each earlier version. Other projects offers your firm's other refrigeration designs.

  2. 2

Read the P–h diagram: the cycle on screen is the solid line and the compared one is dashed, both named under the plot.

  3. 3

Read the table beneath it. It gives On screen, Compared and the difference for the COP, duty, compressor power and each path the heat leaves by, then Heat out.

Both cycles are Kelvin's own saved results, and nothing is re-solved. A difference is given only where both record the figure, and is the difference of the figures as shown. A revision with a note in Version history is offered by that note, so name the ones you will want to find again.

Why some cycles aren't offered

Only a cycle on the same refrigerant is offered (both refrigerants, on a cascade), and a cascade only against a cascade. Enthalpy is measured from each refrigerant's own datum, so two refrigerants can't share one enthalpy axis. A revision saved on Kelvin's earlier property model measures enthalpy from a different datum too: open it, save it again, and it can be compared. The hint under the picker counts what was left out, and why.
