Read the energy results

What the annual readings, the monthly chart and the monthly breakdown show, and what upper bound, lower bound and unsolved months mean.

Energy and running cost · Updated 7 Oct 2026

Beside the sheet, Calculated from names everything the analysis rests on: the system, its equipment selection, the climate profile, the condensing TD and the tariff, each with where it came from or what is missing.

Annual readings

The line at the top of Annual readings says what the figures are: expected consumption in typical weather, or an upper bound at design-high temperatures. Each reading then gives its working beside it.

  • Annual energy: compressor, fans and defrost added up, in kWh, over the year's running hours.
  • Annual cost: the annual energy at your electricity rate, with the most expensive month.
  • Average COP: the mean of the months whose cycle solved, with the lowest and highest month. On the expected basis, each month's COP is its duty over its mean compressor power.
  • Compressor energy, fan energy (with its share of the total) and, where there is defrost, defrost energy.
  • Mean ambient on the expected basis, or mean design ambient on the design-high basis. The design figure is the mean of the twelve monthly design temperatures, not the site's mean temperature.
  • Runtime: the running hours a day over the year.

The monthly chart and breakdown

Monthly energy consumption charts each month's energy, stacked as compressor, fans and defrost, with the ambient that drove it in a panel below. Monthly breakdown lists every month's energy, cost, ambient, condensing temperature where there is one, COP, compressor, fan and defrost power, and hours, with an Annual total row.

On the expected basis, a month's ambient is the mean of its hours. With pads on, the table adds the ambient after the pads beside it.

Upper bound, lower bound and unsolved months

  • Upper bound: the analysis ran at design-high temperatures, so the plant is expected to use less.
  • Lower bound: on the expected basis, the cycle didn't solve in some of the hottest hours. Those hours count fan and defrost energy only, so the plant would use more. The notice says how many hours, in which months, and from what ambient.
  • Unsolved months: on the design-high basis, a month whose cycle didn't solve counts fan and defrost energy only, and its row reads — in the breakdown. With the other months run high, the annual figures are then neither an upper nor a lower bound, and say so.
  • A CO₂ booster's ejector is left out of every month, because its entrainment ratio is entered at the design conditions only. The page says so beside the readings.

The readings in the strip

Pin readings chooses which figures sit in the strip above the page. Annual energy, annual cost and average COP are pinned to start with, and Kelvin remembers your choice in this browser.

Measures that would change the figures, such as faster EC fans or adiabatic pads, are under Energy comparison scenarios: see Compare EC fans, adiabatic pads and a compressor VSD.
